Research Focus

Previous and current research

My research focus is directed towards the interaction between lipid and glucose metabolism and the development of obesity and type 2 diabetes as well as its impact on ageing. We are also interested in understanding the contribution of mitochondrial dysfunction to the complex pathophysiology of these entities. In this regard, it is important for us to better characterize the interorgan crosstalk between the liver, skeletal muscle, heart and adipose tissue, which is reflected in my publications. Moreover, I am also working as a senior physician in the Department of Endocrinology and Diabetes, Charité, where I translate my basic knowledge into bed-side medicine. The translational approach is of critical importance for me. I have therefore conducted clinical studies as well as basic science throughout my research career and consider the flexibility in both areas as one of my major skills.
